My final race pace training run was completed this morning and I can taper to Memorial Day. The 'Run with the Wolves' race turned out to be a good warm-up. I liked the fact that there were no chips and the race was based on gun time with a bib tear off at the end. I had not done a race like this since last years Bolder Boulder, so I was able to refamiliarize. I also did not see any mile markers or hear anyone giving splits. So I was pretty clueless about my pace and ran based on effort.
Not wanting to go all out, I was expecting to do a 7:30 pace if it was not too hot and humid. All season I have been busting it hard from the start line, but I held a little back today. As often in the middle of races I starting thinking how stupid this is, how hot and humid it is getting, how slow I am running, how I will never reach my under 50 minute goal on Memorial Day.
Well it turned out that I was not nearly as slow as I thought since I finished in 22:45, only 11 seconds off my PR.
So Jamoosh, it is finally taper time as you have been recommending. My hamstring still is talking to me a little, but nothing to be concerned about at the moment. Jamoosh's idea of taper for himself is to run a marathon the weekend before a marathon with a brewpub tour in between. But he doesn't seem to recommend such a taper for the rest of us. Selfish guy wants to keep all the fun to himself.
I could get him into real trouble by pointing out that he wrote two gushing posts with three pictures about his hot new Scion while his anniversary was good for one (short) post and one picture. But I wouldn't do that to Jamoosh.

No, Jamoosh deserves better than that.
Smokin' - I figured your time at 7:20 per mile pace!
Excellent run! Run smart during the hot and humid season and you will be rewarded down the road. I feel you WILL break 50!
Here's a fine photo of our proud warrior in action at RwtW:
