I am listening to one of my favorite songs, David Bowie's Heroes. It should be on the Jamoosh top one hundred. His list is lessened by its omission. He chose "Let's Dance" from Bowie instead. Catchy tune I agree, but really Jamoosh, out of all that Bowie repertoire, that is the best you can come up with?
Intellectually, I can not say running is heroic. Emotionally, I come up with a different answer. Ordinary people of any age or skill who train consistently week after week, race to their best, and endure distance running feels heroic to me. At the very least it is a motivational tool for my own commitment.
In July in Houston, there are a lot of peole now aspiring to be a hero just for one day. That day is less than six months away on January 14, 2007. The training groups for the Houston Marathon have begun. At the On the Run store today I was told Bay Area Fit has about 400 and Pearland Fit about 200 in their programs this year.
I ponder why I do not join and train with a group for the Marathon. I guess I am enjoying the freedom of making my own schedule and the camaraderie of the Bloggers and the BARCers. I am also focused on training and running year round rather than the big event January.
Speaking of heroes, I don't want to be like Keith anymore, sorry Keith, you've been dropped. I want to be like Floyd Landis (ex his bad hip and planned hip replacement). I'll bet the traffic on his blog has picked up a bit in the past few weeks.
I did get in a smooth 5.5 mile run at the Seabrook trails last night at a 9:19 pace and a 141 average HR. My yoga cross training has been neglected for a couple of months and I could feel it at yoga class today. Man running sure tightens up the hamstrings. I had to bend my knees a lot for my Uttanasana (Standing Forward Bend) and certainly did not look like this:
Then again I have never looked like that.

See, I would have to say either Space Oddity or Rebel Rebel. You are both crazy.
I don't consider what I am doing heroic. But in some way, part of what I am doing this for it to be a hero to my kids. I want them to see their daddy do this thing that everyone knows can't be done.
I now own Heroes. Also purchased China Girl and Golden Years.
Christine may be right. Both Space Oddity and rebel, Rebel are ahead of Let's Dance in popularity on iTunes. Heroes is way down the list.
I like it! Keep up the good work. Thanks for sharing this wonderful site with us.
