Recovery

This period of peak marathon training had me pretty worn out this weekend. I ended up going to bed at 7:30 last night. This year I'm trying to pay more attention to staying injury and illness free in the final weeks of preparation. Being careful about sleep and making sure I wash my hands a lot are part of the plan.

I did an easy 3 mile recovery run with Gerlinde on Saturday evening. We enjoyed the Seabrook trails at a 10:40/mi pace. My heart rate average was only 119. Sunday morning was a different story as I went out to Terry Hershey Park for BARC's roving run. I stuck with Vera Balic for 6 miles at an under 9/mi pace. She sped up and I slowed down. I ended up doing 12.8 miles at a 9:10/mi pace and an average HR of 145. Much tougher than it should have been, hence the 7:30 pm bedtime.

Gerlinde has been running pretty much every other day. She does at least one long run (1 hour), one track run (backstretch striders), and one 5k each week. I'm sure she'll PR as soon as we get her to a timed 5k as she is running under 10/mi at the track. Tonight she did her track run. A man (who did not run) showed up at the track with a young man (who did run) while she was running. The first time she passed the man, he asked her to run with the youngster for 1.5 miles and get timed. She was having none of that, so she said she was almost done. The second time around he said "you are looking good". She didn't like that either, no one is supposed to watch her running. The third time around he asked her "how many miles are you running." So that was it, time to call it quits.

Well he was probably just being friendly, but then again strange men are always talking to her. When she flew to Europe last, she sat next to "Radar" from MASH. He talked to her the whole way. Of course his ego was bruised since she never watched MASH and had no idea who he was. For some reason, strange women never just start talking to me. Now why is that? And I never talk my way out of a traffic ticket either. Life is not fair.
