The secret to winning hardware in a relay is to pick your teammates well and hope the other clubs put their fast people in another division. There is no chance I will ever place in my age group in a HARRA race....unless it is a relay. So we put together a mixed veterans (over 50) team called Dimes and Diamonds. The dimes were the two men, since 22 minute 5k 50 year old male runners like us are a dime a dozen. The diamonds were the two women, since they routinely place in races.
The plan worked to perfection as we walked away with the second place trophy in our category at today's Bayou Bash 4 by 2 mile relay. Our time was 55:58, so we averaged 7 minutes per mile. I ran faster than our teams average and did the 2 miles in 13:25 by my watch, or 6:43 per mile. The winning team ran about 50 minutes so we were nowhere near being in first.
We joked afterwards that our club should have a qualifying event prior to the next relay to chose the two 50+ men to run with our two Diamonds.
Here is yours truly in the final yards to the finish, actually looking like a runner.
