What Goes Up Most Come Down (Or Not)

It seems when running, your heart rate can go up quite easily, but getting it down again is not so easy (unless you stop running). Today was a case in point. I went for a 3.7mi easy run on Kipper Mease Trail along Red Bluff.

And it was easy for about three quarters of a mile. There were these cyclists, a family, on the path. I was catching up to them. With visions of Ryan Hall running the Houston Half at 13mph, and probably passing half the MS150 field, I was really looking forward to passing some cyclists. Well they sped up a little. So I sped up and my heart rate went up from the 130s to the 140s.

I started closing the gap again, surely I will pass them now. They sped up a little. So I sped up and my heart rate went from the 140s to the 150s. I started to catch them again. So they sped up again. Well of course I sped up. My heart rate went over 160. I closed the gap to about 8 feet, and they looked behind. They sped up. I exclaimed "Don't go faster" but they did not heed me. I was reaching my turn around point anyways, so I let them go.

Now that my heart rate was high, it stayed pretty high the rest of the way even after slowing down a lot. I ended up with a 145 average heart rate for a 3.7mile run on a trail in 32:52.

I'll leave outrunning cyclists to Ryan Hall.

Speaking of cyclists, my wife and I drove a SAG wagon at the Space Race today. 5000 cyclists enjoyed great weather and rode 20, 40, 60, 80, and 100 mile loops. We started at 7:45 am on the course and finished at 3:15 pm. Driving a SAG is some work.

Well it counts as MS150 training as I am more proficient at fixing flats now.

dude- i needed you! I ended up SAGing at mile 67 b/c I was dehydrated and thought riding while dizzy was a bad idea! I caught a ride from a super nice guy named Charles and his 3 kiddos.

i was playing with a really fun toy at work today: the garmin frontrunner. it uses GPS to track your mileage, pace, and all sorts of other goodies. you can set up different profiles for running, cycling and "other sports." the display can show up to four different things... all on your wrist! it's way nifty! i love my job... so many toys, so little time!
