I admit it, cycling is nice, but I would rather be running more. There are several drawbacks to cycling. These are:
- The expense is quite high. I've yet to see a $3000+ custom made running shoe.
- Long rides put sores in places you don't want to be sore. Procreation is bound to suffer.
- Runners share war stories about muscle, tendon and an occasional stress fracture injury. Cyclists share war stories about broken arms, collarbones, hips, legs, and how that helmet saved them from an early grave.
- A headwind doesn't bother a runner (much).
- It's easy to run while travelling. One could buy a $400 bike case and lug one's bike on business trips I guess.
So don't jump on the bike SAG wagon Edwin until you can't run 160 miles a month.
And for Katy....
1) I'm scared going fast in turns as well and am really poor at turns. Especially if it is wet or there is gravel.
2) It is harder to get one's heart rate up cycling than running. But don't forget you are a runner with great cardio in the base case. Your cycling legs are limiting at the moment, not your cardio. As your legs get adapted to cycling, you will go faster and your heart rate will increase. Spinning, on the other hand, does the trick on the heart ratee quite nicely.
3) Keep your cadence high (90 rpm) and you are using your gears correctly.
4) Everyone looks dumb in a helmet. The nice thing is you can't recognize anybody afterwards.
