Had a few tasty tequila drinks last night and it seriously affected my bike ride today. Heavy head and heavy legs limited my ride to 41 miles at a 16mph pace. But my heart did not have to work very hard, only a 122 avg HR.
I'm in Colorado on vacation this week, while last week I was in Holland working. Did pass through Houston for a day and got in a nice 65 mile club ride at 20mph and 146 avg HR on Saturday. No tequila does help ones performance.
While in Holland I could not resist going for a 4 mile run along a canal and through a park. While it was great, my leg screamed NO and I find myself unable to run again.
Looks like I will do my best to emulate Michael Phelps for a while and add more swimming to my biking.
The woman's marathon was inspiring to me in an odd way. While I hate to see any athlete not reach their goals, the fact of the matter is the marathon does not care about your goals. It is unforgiving, both in training and the event, just ask Deana Kastor (broken foot) and Paula Radcliffe (only 3.5 weeks of training due to a stress fracture).
And for sure ask Zuzana Tomas, who finished in 67th place. You can read all about her experience on her blog RunZuzanaRun. Her finish is eerily reminiscent of my last marathon. Her calves started cramping at 29k. At the 39k mark she had the worst cramp of her life in her hamstring. She stopped and got help to massage out the cramp. She started moving again. At 40.5k the cramp came back and she was on the ground. Eventually, she was able to massage it out and will herself to finish.
Even though her pace is so much faster than mine and she was competing on the greatest athletic stage on earth, I know exactly how she felt over the last 3 kilometers of her Olympic race. Being on the ground with a mile to go or less in a marathon is not a cool feeling.
