At the insistance of our family Energizer Bunny, we took a camping trip to Big Bend. Energizer Bunny, aka daughter, happens to work part time in an REI while going to graduate school. So she knows her outfitter stuff. The rest of us are just clueless hotel dwellers.
She didn't tell us it would be 24 degrees at the no generators allowed, no showers, no heated anything Cottonwood campsite. At least they had the cleanest bathrooms you can ever imagine in a campgrounds. They are brand new since the campgrounds flooded badly when the Rio Grande flooded earlier this year from a tropical storm. So we learned some survival skills as the gear she brought makes one great cup of coffee. We will be better off in the next hurricane power outage.
Last time the four of us were in Big Bend was 23 years ago. The two "little" ones in the picture were 2 and 4 at the time. Just like last time, we hiked up the Lost Mine Trail. Only this time I did not have to carry a 2 year old boy up the whole way. Energizer bunny was 4 and she hiked it without the assistance of an REI trekking pole that she now carries. I did wear my Garmin so I have the following statistics from this hike:
Elevation min 5733' max 6915'
Distance 4.8 miles
Heart rate 94 avg 130 max
Time 123 minutes up 58 minutes down

Looking good!
Looks like an awesome trip! My last trip there was 32 years ago...we'd like to go when the youngest is a bit older!
