The chart above shows how my weekly mileage has been increasing steadily since the Houston Marathon. Since I have already run 18 miles this week, I will hit the 20 mile mark this weekend, in the sixteenth week since the marathon. While this is a rather conservative approach to mileage, I have been concentrating more on racing and speed than long slow distance running. I also wanted to get comfortable in my new shoe choice and to see if my knee could fully recover. Everything seems to be coming along fine. As a consequence, I've set some PRs for the 5 to 10k distance that makes my longer distance records look rather pedestrian. I'll be gunning for those later this year.
I would like to run in the 20 to 25 mile range for the next several weeks, while racing only once or twice a month. Certainly it seems a little odd to be ramping up the mileage as the summer starts to bring its full force of heat and humidity upon us. However, this will just slow me down rather than stop me.
Tonight was a good example. It was hot this evening, but I got in a nice aerobic 7 miler in a not very fast 73 minutes while averaging 76% of my maximum heart rate. I wish I could go faster in the aerobic zone, but not in this weather and not until I build up more endurance for longer distances.
My other runs this week were a Kemah bridge run on Thursday night (followed by a couple of Shiners while listening to outdoor music on the boardwalk) and a Monday night run with the On the Run people. The Bridge run in the evening was much tougher than at 5 am since it was hot and windy.
