So sayeth Dr Jeffrey Ross, podiatrist and runner. I will comply, cycle shirt and swim trunks for me for a little longer. I finally got in to see the fine Dr Ross, contributing writer to Inside Texas Running. Dr Ross has personal experience as he was out with achilles tendonitis for eight months, but came back as good as new. We looked at my gait and X-rays of my foot. My calves are very tight limiting my ankle flex and putting more stress on the achilles. I have a some small bone spurs on the joints of my big toe, limiting toe lift off and putting more stress on the achilles. I now have a night splint. I will get an orthotic to control mid strike pronation better. I will continue my stretching routine as I started a routine of weighted eccentric calf stretches about two weeks ago. I will get the achilles massaged weekly.
In the end it looks like it primarily comes down to tight calves (and overuse). I shoulda kept the yoga up. And don't you EVER do a fast seven miler the day after your longest long run training for a marathon. Duh.
