Pro Triathlete Encounter

As I got to the bus station in Boulder for my trip to the airport, there was a fit looking woman with a bike travel bag. There was a triathlon in Boulder on Sunday and this Australian woman competed. I asked her if she did it for a living or a hobby and she said a living.

I talked with her some about training and nutrition, she was quite approachable and friendly. She encouraged me to move into triathlon and strongly recommended not doing swim training alone, but with a masters group. Finally I got her to autograph my triathlon log. She is Melissa Ashton. She is training for the upcoming Hawaii Ironman, which she finished in 2005 in 10th place for women. At Sunday's tri, she finished as 3rd place woman with a time of 4:23:31 for the 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, and 13.1 mile run event.

She had been in Boulder training for nine weeks while catching some races across the country. She did one in Texas in June, the Buffalo Springs Lake 70.3, and finished 5th just ahead of Austin's Desiree Ficker.
