Share the Road

I should know better than to cycle during Friday rush hour. There is something in the air on Friday afternoons that turns car drivers into demons. But I wanted a nice easy cycle to see if a left calf strain (that is another story) is up for a longer ride on Saturday. Also, since I'm jumping on a plane for a business trip tomorrow, I really want to get my miles in.

So I took the safe USA 10 miler route that is half hike/bike path. The first stretch without a bike path is the Nasa Road 1 bridge along Clear Lake Park. But there are 6 lanes on NASA Road 1, lot's of room for cars and bikes. I'm hustling along on the right side of the right hand lane, at a not so pedestrian 23mph, and this silver little SUV passes close and honks. There is not much car traffic and there are only three lanes for him to chose from. Why do I think it is a "he"? Well, what are the odds you think.

I hate it when cars honk right next to me. He got a one finger wave. This is perhaps not how the Dalai Lama would respond. I guess I should have chanted the mantra "Om Namah Shivaya". The soon-to-be Cardinal DiNardo of the Archdiocese of Houston-Galveston would counsel me to pray for the soul of the driver and all other drivers. They certainly can use the help.

So that got the blood flowing and I cycled hard the rest of the way, turning my easy 16mph ride into an average 17.8mph over 13 miles.

Share the road people.

I really don't get why they do that either; they're obviously not threatened by a bike. They didn't lose a lane, or a chance to drive faster.

I guess I just can't get into their head what the honking does for them.
