It was a beautiful sight and a joy to run into Pine Gully Park in the early dawn. It had been a long time since I last was there and I savored every stride. You too can run into the rising sun over Galveston Bay and Pine Gully Park in Seabrook. All you have to do is run the Seabrook Lucky Trails Half or Full Marathon in March.
Perhaps on your third or fourth loop in the park, when the sun is truly in the sky, the view won't bring such an exhilarating feeling to your heart. Even if you do not run Seabrook, come on down and help out the BARC water stop captain (me) on either day. Wear your St Patrick's Day gear, we will have a blast.
My run today was a planned five miler at a relatively low heart rate, which means 9 to 9:40 pace. The first mile and a quarter was at a 9 minute pace and a 140HR avg. I dialed it down from there in order to keep my average heart rate below 140. Finished a 5.6mile run in 51:50 for an average pace of 9:18 and an average heart rate of 139. Right on target.
I followed the run with a 20 mile bike ride including 6 loops of the Kemah bridge at a 14.8mph average and a 135 avg heart rate. If you are on a long endurance ride, the key to climbing is to keep your heart rate below your lactate threshold and not get gassed. You don't sprint in the middle of a marathon do you? Hammering up a hill on a long distance ride is like sprinting in a marathon, a mistake. So I kept my cadence high and my heart rate at 149 or lower up the hills. It works, I could have done several more loops.
Saturday I did a 51 mile ride with the club at 17.8mph and a 136 average heart rate.
Great weather, great running, great riding, feeling good.

I did a 40 mile ride starting at 9:00, so went over the bridge myself around 10:00 a.m. Every biker I passed, I'd look to see if it was you! I wouldn't have been surprised to see you out there.
You are an animal!
