Ten Mile Weekend

A boatload of Houston Bloggers (Dave, Holden, Jon, Bill, Cassie, Edwin, Sarah, June, Vic, Steve, Jessica, Jan) took care of business this weekend both north in Woodlands and south in Clear Lake. We might have had use for a boat when the heavens opened up this morning. Nevertheless, we surfed our way home with many PRs. Congratulations to all and it's on to the Houston Half Marathon in two weeks!

We were honored to host Bernard Manirakiza at our home Saturday night and Sunday morning. Bernard was the 2006 Greater Austin Sports Association's Athlete of the Year. It was great that he made the trek to Clear Lake to compete in our 10 miler. Bernard was an outstanding house guest. I would not be surprised if he won the Athlete of the Year award as much for his easy smile and gracious ways as his athletic feats.

While we were rooting for Bernard to take it all, he ended up second overall in a time of 50:50.9, which is a 5:05 pace. The overall winner, Richard Kimeli, runs for AmeriKenyan Running Club in Sante Fe, NM and finished in 50:16.8, which is a 5:02 pace. I heard yesterday that the course record was over 51 minutes, so it is likely Richard now holds it.

Quiz: Which runner in the picture came in 2nd place and which one came in 276th?

The most anxious part of hosting Bernard was our worry about making sure that we did nothing that would affect his performance on the day. We made a family pasta meal and were meticulous about asking him about all the ingredients. We told him where the upstairs temperature control was in case he wanted to adjust the temperature for sleeping. Of course, he was very easy going about all this and did not seem at all concerned.

As for my own race, I told Bernard I would finish 35 minutes after him and he said "No" as if I was much faster than that! Well I did finish 34 minutes and 23 seconds after him (chip time), so I guess he was right, I was faster than 35 minutes behind him. I was shooting for 1:25 or under and I got my 1:25:13.1(PR).

Very cool on the houseguest -- if I had room in my tiny apartment, I might've hosted. Would've been cool to pick the brain of someone so speedy!

Then again, I could just pick *your* brain, since you are pretty speedy yourself! :) Nice run this morning in the flood, Joe!

Good running, Joe, well done on the PR. I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to meet Bernard this morning, thanks indeed for making that happen!

Jacob Rotich, 2005 winner, was the former record holder indeed with a time of 51:02.8.

It has been lowered each year.

Armenteros, Wade, Rotich and now Kimeli.

How fun! Hey....would you like a 2-year old houseguest sometime? He's really cute, and sweet too.

Great run - you are quite the speedster.

Yeah, I'd be afraid for Bernard around our house that he'd slip on a hotwheels car or trip over a Starwars light sabre...not too good for PR's.

A great house guest and a PR. Now if Notre Dame would only win a game or two...
