The Tour de France went over the highest pass in Europe today. It crests at 2802 meters. Let's see, that is about 9200 feet. I did three mountain pass climbs on July 12 that are about a half mile higher than that. Wimps.
Well they are doing it a little faster and are doing another major climbing course tomorrow. The route today had about 12000 feet of climbing over 98 miles. The route tomorrow has about 14000 feet of climbing over 130 miles. Not so wimpy after all.
I've paid the price for my day in the mountains. My muscles are still knotted up and sore in a few places more than a week later. My achilles has flared up again and I am sidelined. I am sure the intensive climbing is the major contributor to the relapse as climbing works the lower leg pretty hard.
Back to the injured reserve.
Is it better to push to your limit and get sidelined? Or hold back for lesser challenge and perhaps not?
Damn the torpedoes, one just has to have to live on the edge once in awhile.
