One has not lived until one has bonked in an endurance effort. Today the 18mph group was nowhere to be seen. Perhaps it is because one of the 18mph ride leaders fell last Saturday and broke his collarbone. This weighed on my mind during my ride, breaking bones is not part of the plan. So I went out with the faster 21mph group for the first time. Then a friend talked me into going 60 miles.
It really wasn't that bad but after 1 hour and 50 minutes I fell off the back of the six person peloton. We had averaged 19.1 mph, but there were bursts where my heart rate was 170+ when my max is about 180.
So I bonked and could do no more than 14-16 mph for about 30 minutes. Fond memories of the Houston marathon. It was just one of those days. Finished the 60 miles on my own with an overall average of 17.6 mph.
Shattered, I talked my wife into driving us to Freebirds for a burrito. Every bonk deserves a burrito.
I am itching to go buy some running shoes to stare at lovingly.

Gosh, I hope the 18 MPH Group is NOT the slow group. Otherwise I'm on my own.
