Jamoosh wrote an excellent piece on running safety after dark in July. I was thinking today about how safety conscious he is and that I should reinforce that on my blog. Of late I have gotten more concerned about car behaviour at intersections. I run often near our local high school. With school back in session, there is more traffic and there are a lot of young drivers tearing in and out of the area. Beware.
Unfortunately, in spite of thinking about Jamoosh's good safety practices, I got my run in later than I planned. The last two thirds of the run was in the dark. For once I did not have a cell phone with me. I ran my 7.2 mile route in reverse of my typical way, which put the darkest areas in the second half of the run.
Wouldn't you know it I tripped on an uneven sidewalk leading to a bridge, that I did not see. Three miles from home and a pretty scrapped up right knee. I finished the run. Fortunately, I only stubbed my big toe and scrapped the knee. No serious damage, but that is pure luck.
Learn from my mishap and Jamoosh's safety guidance. Don't get hurt. Don't run at night on routes that you can not see the path. Be smarter than I.
I did get my 7 miler in and a 4 mile bridge run last night.
This morning, when I weighed myself, I was below 210 pounds for the first time since the 70's. If an old slug like me can feel fitter and healthier than ever through regular aerobic exercise, anyone can. I can not guarantee it will make you smart, since I was dumb enough to run on a dark path tonight. But it will make you fit.
I converted to blogger beta today and did some remodeling of the old blog homestead.
