Cool weather (for Houston) and a flat course for a runner is like putting a slice of juicy steak in front of a dog. Indeed it appears that several HRB runners riding the trolley this morning set 5k PRs, including the four J's (Jen, Jessica, June and Joe). I believe Steve was the fastest HRB member on the day and also set a PR, although he was targeting an even faster run. I can highly recommend the Bellaire Trolley race, not only for the course, but especially for all the free food afterwards. In addition to the normal fare, yummy mini Prince hamburgers, CiCis pizza, cake, ice cream, and Hooters hot wings were all sinfully available to spoil all that good healthy running. If you hung around long enough, you could have taken some whole pizzas home.
As for the race, I went for a PR and obtained it easily. The start was rather crowded and indeed one runner took a tumble in the first 100 yards. My first mile was an outrageous (for me) 7:05 followed by a 7:15 second mile. My finishing chip time was 22:34, which is 1 min and 18 sec faster than my previous best set in December 2005. Another runner came up along me with about 70 yards to go, I said let's do it and we raced to the line. He nipped me by a toe, but it is nice to know I have more in me.
I think one reason that I like to race is that it washes away all cares and troubles. Who can feel anything but exhilaration after laying it on the line for 5k or more?
Some day I want one of those little trolleys that they give as awards to the top 3 in their age group. I've got a long way to go as there were 18 people faster than me in my age group. However, when I run this race in 20 years, the 70 year old age group will not have so many to beat!

Joe, nice job. Totally impressed. PR Saturday! Holden, Lisa, Bezner .. do I get to count my international PR? (Just joking!)
I would do NOTHING to take away from the great effort out there!
Way to go!
Hopefully I can draft right behind you on the 70-75 age group and take the second place trolley.
Excellent. No go enjoy that juicy steak. Mmmmm, steak...
Rock on Joe! Awesome!
Joe...dangit, you were too fast for me today! i couldn't keep you sight, but you sound like you ran awesome!!!!!!!
thanks for the chat before the race, i like your confidence and it bled into my race today! :)
Nice running. Way to go on the PR.
you ROCK!
I looked and looked for you afterwards. I just missed you as I found Jen and Jessica, but then i went looking again, to no avail.
see you soon i hope!!!
Congrats, my fellow "J"!! That's cool that you and the other runner were able to push each other at the end.
The food offerings at the post race were funny, weren't they? And only non-alcoholic beer....that's just cruel.
;)
