6 More For Good Measure

I had not planned to run today, but I felt pretty good this morning. So I went to the Boulder Road Runners Sunday morning run. I had not been to one before, so I was not sure what to expect. The turnout was more than I expected, probably 30 to 40 runners. We all took off along the same route and strung out as there were a lot of different paces. Some people started turning back after 2 to 2.5 miles, I went for 3 and then returned. All in all a very relaxing 6 miles in 57 minutes with Accelerade, bagels, and cookies waiting at the end.

While running, we passed a woman with a dog along the trail. One of our runners went over a greeted her warmly, calling her "Colleen". I looked at her more closely and recognized the woman walking her dog as Colleen de Reuck. Colleen has competed in four Olympics, three times in the marathon and once in 10,000m. She won the 1996 Berlin Marathon and finished in 13th place in this years Chicago Marathon with a time of 2:33:18. At 42, she is clearly the top female masters runner in this country.

While Colleen holds most American masters long distance records in her age group, one that she doesn't hold is the 30k. That is held by the great Houston runner Carol McLatchie, who set the record of 1:54:00 on December 12, 1992 in Sugarland, TX. Will someone beat it in two weeks? We'll be there to see, although I'll be finishing closer to 2:54 than 1:54!

Woah, potential correction, Young Fella, Colleen is one of America's top runners, period. What a phenom! Very cool post.

Great catch on McLatchie.

You'll find on page 2 of HARRA's Fooprints in December, which was finalized last weekend, the following items:

The 30K has also been home to a number of current American
Masters road racing records. They include the following:
• Houston’s Carol McLatchie won the 1992 race at the age of
41 in 1:53:59 for the all-time and 40-44 age group mark
• Beaumont’s Joyce Gaskin, 55, in the same race, covered the
distance in 2:17:31 to set the women’s 55-59 standard
• Ed Benham, 78, of Ocean City, Maryland, in 1985 ran the
Kingwood course in 2:28 for the men’s 75-79 record
• Walt Washburn of Vienna, Virginia - the father of David —
posted a new 80-84 record in 2003 with a time of 3:04:59

You almost slipped one by the Blogfather!

More than likely, I'll see you at the 30K.
