Well I did my best to run like an ass at the Summer Kick-Off and came home with an honest 22:45.6 result. Under 23 minutes is realistically the best I could expect given the little running that I do and the warm and humid conditions. We were blessed with a touch of wind and overcast conditions or perhaps it would have been worse.
It was truly a "Hang on Sloopy" run for me as I went out the first mile at PR pace and ran it in 6:56. This was not sustainable as my heart rate was limiting due to the need to keep my body temperature under control. So I had to slow down in mile two, which was more like a 7:20 pace. Even this was too much to sustain and I think I did the final portion at about a 7:40 pace, resulting in an overall average of 7:19.
As a cold weather runner and a cyclist, I'm very content with the time. There was no chance to place in my age group anyways as the top three were all under 20 minutes. I did have the satisfaction of beating a couple of BARC buddies, including "Flicka" who finished 19 seconds ahead of me at the 5 miler. The rubber match will be the Bolder Boulder 10k to see who has bragging rights going into the fall.
Right now I am feeling pretty good about my chances. Although I don't know how I can drag these tired, old bones over a 10k course given all my aches and pains.
Lot's of BARC and CLFC folks at the race including blogger's own Sarah, sporting her TIR tech shirt.

Summer is officially here. I did my first mile in just under 10 and then faded worse than you did, with the next two just over 11. Stupid summer.
Congrats on a great race! I had to take off right after I finished to see Jose off to Corpus Christi or I would've stayed to chat.
Nice job, Joe.
I was wearing my TIR tech shirt too, but I was reporting and working the social circuit today.
I got my miles in later on the treadmill.
Nice first mile.
